A hard prompt: “Argue both sides of free buses”, in full.

  • Claude Fable 5.1

Failed: Graded 4.7 of 5 on average (lowest 4); but a paragraph of 99 words, over the 90 allowed.

Free buses remove the single biggest barrier to ridership: the fare. Every boarding becomes faster with no payment friction, cutting dwell times and making service more reliable. Low-income residents, who spend a disproportionate share of income on transport, gain immediate relief, expanding access to jobs, schools, and healthcare. More riders mean fewer cars, less congestion, and cleaner air for everyone. Fare collection itself costs money—equipment, enforcement, cash handling—that could be redirected to service. Cities like Kansas City and Tallinn show ridership rises and communities benefit.

Fares typically cover a meaningful slice of operating costs, and abolishing them creates a permanent hole that must be filled by taxes or, more often, by cutting service. Riders consistently say they want frequency and reliability more than free trips; a bus that comes every eight minutes is worth more than one that's free but comes every thirty. Free systems in practice draw riders from walking and cycling, not from cars, so climate gains are marginal. Overcrowding, vandalism, and buses used as shelters have strained free networks. Targeted discounts for those in need deliver equity without sacrificing service quality.

  • Kimi K3

Passed: Graded 4.7 of 5 on average (lowest 4).

Free buses would transform urban life. Fares raise little revenue after collection costs, yet they deter the very riders—low-income workers, students, the elderly—who depend on transit most. Eliminating them speeds boarding, cuts traffic congestion, reduces emissions, and functions as targeted economic relief for households struggling with costs. Cities like Tallinn and Kansas City show ridership climbs sharply when fares vanish. A city that wants cleaner air, less gridlock, and genuine mobility equity should treat buses like libraries or parks: a public good, free at the point of use.

Yet "free" transit is never free—someone pays, and often it's riders themselves. Forgoing fare revenue means cutting service frequency, deferring maintenance, or raising taxes on residents who never ride. Crowded, deteriorating buses push people back into cars, worsening congestion. Studies show riders value reliability far more than zero fares; a bus that comes every five minutes beats a free one that comes hourly. Scarce funds spent subsidizing middle-class commuters could instead expand routes to underserved neighborhoods. Better to invest in service quality than in a populist gesture.

Prices don't include tax, which is added where it applies and shown before you pay. A paid plan's month is one allowance shared by every model, so each monthly count is the most you get if all of it goes to that model. It renews each billing period; everyday models refill daily at 00:00 UTC. Long chats count more per reply. How pricing works.

Every limit is published. Paid plans also have a monthly fair-use limit on AI cost: Plus $3.75, Pro $7.50, Max $20, Ultra $42, Studio $85. Using every message on your plan at typical sizes stays under it; very large messages and heavy research use it faster. Every limit, explained.
