Our tests of xAI's models

We send "Reply with OK" to Grok 4.7 every 15 minutes, and time how long each takes to start answering and to finish. The verdict covers the last 45 minutes: our last three tests.

What xAI's status page says

xAI's own status page, read at most once a minute. It reports incidents once xAI's team confirms them, so it can lag behind what users and our tests see.

What our test covers, and what it doesn't

Our test calls xAI's Grok model through its API, reached through OpenRouter as llmwise's chat does. grok.com and Grok in the X app use the same models with their own apps, sign-in and limits, so they can fail on their own.

Each test is one message of a few words, with the reply capped at 32 tokens, tried once, with no retry and no switch to another route. A test counts as failed when the model refuses it as busy (a rate limit or "overloaded"), breaks (a server error), drops the connection, or takes more than 30 seconds. A test our own request broke doesn't count against Grok.

What to do now

  1. Check the two answers above. If both look fine, it's likely your limit, the app or your network.

  2. Reload, start a new chat, or update the X app.

  3. Try grok.com in a browser if the app fails, or the other way round.

  4. If xAI's side is having trouble, ask another company's model for now.

Ask another model

llmwise has Claude, GPT, Gemini and more in one chat, so an outage at one company doesn't stop your work. The free trial is 5 messages, with a sign-in link by email and no card.

Grok errors, and how to fix them

The errors people see most with Grok, what each one usually means, and what to try.

  • "Something went wrong" on grok.com or in X

A server error, or a problem with the app.

Reload, or start a new chat; update the X app. If our test fails too, it's xAI's side.

  • "You've reached your limit"

Your account's Grok messages are used up for now.

It resets after the time shown. That's your plan's limit, not an outage.

  • API 429 or 503

Too many requests from you (429), or xAI is busy (503).

Retry with a growing wait between tries, and fewer requests at once.

Questions

Is Grok down for everyone, or just me?

Compare the two answers above. If our test passes and status.x.ai lists no open incident, the problem is more likely your account's Grok limit, the X app, or your network.

Do you test Grok in the X app?

We test Grok through xAI's API, as llmwise's chat uses it, reached through OpenRouter. Grok on grok.com and in the X app runs on the same models with its own apps and limits.

Where does the official status come from?

xAI posts incidents on status.x.ai and in its RSS feed, which is what we read. It doesn't publish a live status for each part, so when no incident is open we say so rather than call it all clear.

What can I use while Grok is down?

Another company's model. In llmwise Claude, GPT, and Gemini are in the same chat, and the free trial is 5 messages with no card.

Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Grok, Kimi, and GLM, in one chat.
