Our tests of OpenAI's models

We send "Reply with OK" to GPT-6 Luna every 5 minutes and GPT-6 Astra every 30 minutes, and time how long each takes to start answering and to finish. The verdict covers the last 15 minutes: our last three tests.

What OpenAI's status page says

OpenAI's own status page, read at most once a minute. It reports incidents once OpenAI's team confirms them, so it can lag behind what users and our tests see.

What our test covers, and what it doesn't

Our test calls OpenAI's GPT models through OpenAI's API, not the ChatGPT app. They share the models but not everything else: ChatGPT has its own sign-in, website and limits. When our test fails, OpenAI's models are having trouble, which usually reaches ChatGPT too; when only ChatGPT fails, OpenAI's status page for ChatGPT is the one to watch.

Each test is one message of a few words, with the reply capped at 32 tokens, tried once, with no retry and no switch to another route. A test counts as failed when the model refuses it as busy (a rate limit or "overloaded"), breaks (a server error), drops the connection, or takes more than 30 seconds. A test our own request broke doesn't count against ChatGPT.

What to do now

  1. Check the two answers above. If both look fine, the problem is likely your browser, app or network.

  2. Refresh, then start a new chat: a broken conversation fails on its own.

  3. Sign out and back in, or try a private window with extensions off, or the phone app on mobile data.

  4. If it's OpenAI's side, ask another company's model until it's back.

Ask another model

llmwise has Claude, Gemini, Grok and more in one chat, so an outage at one company doesn't stop your work. The free trial is 5 messages, with a sign-in link by email and no card.

ChatGPT errors, and how to fix them

The errors people see most with ChatGPT, what each one usually means, and what to try.

  • "Something went wrong"

A catch-all: a server hiccup, a broken conversation, or something in the browser.

Refresh the page, then start a new chat. If it persists, sign out and back in, or try a private window with extensions off.

  • "Network error" during a long answer

The connection dropped while the answer was still streaming.

Ask for a shorter answer or for it in parts, and reload to see if the rest arrived. A VPN or a flaky connection makes it more likely.

  • "Too many requests"

Your account sent more than ChatGPT allows in a short time.

Wait a few minutes before sending again. Many quick messages, or a script running in the background, can trigger it.

  • "At capacity" or very slow answers

OpenAI is short of room for the model you picked.

Wait and try again, or pick a different model in ChatGPT's menu. If our test shows problems too, it's on OpenAI's side.

Questions

Is ChatGPT down for everyone, or just me?

Look at both answers at the top of this page. If our test of OpenAI's models passes and OpenAI's status page shows ChatGPT working, the problem is more likely on your side: the browser, the app's version, your network or your account's limits. The steps below go through those in order.

Why does ChatGPT keep saying "Something went wrong"?

It's ChatGPT's catch-all error. It can mean OpenAI's servers had trouble, a conversation got too long or broke, or a browser extension got in the way. Refresh, start a new chat, and try a private window; if it keeps happening for everyone, it shows up on status.openai.com.

Does your test check the ChatGPT app itself?

No. We test OpenAI's GPT models through OpenAI's API, the way llmwise uses them. The ChatGPT app runs on the same models but has its own servers, sign-in and limits, so one can fail while the other works. That's why this page shows OpenAI's own status for ChatGPT as well.

What can I use while ChatGPT is down?

Another company's model. In llmwise you can ask Claude, Gemini, and Grok in the same chat, and the free trial is 5 messages with no card.
