Abstract. We followed 1,240 adults aged 50 to 70 for eight years to test whether daily walking is linked to memory decline. Participants who walked at least 7,000 steps a day had a 23% lower rate of decline on standard memory tests than those who walked under 3,000, after adjusting for age, education and heart disease. The link was stronger in participants who walked briskly. We found no difference between walking in one session and in several shorter ones. Because this is an observational study, it cannot show that walking causes the difference; a randomized trial is under way.
